Wreath of Victory Tablecloth Pattern

A lovely vintage crochet tablecloth made from beautifully detailed motifs, joined together to create an elegant wreath-inspired design with a delicate decorative border.
MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS "BIG BALL" BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. A. 104, Size 30: 27 balls of No. 1 White, No. 61 Ecru
or
No. 42 Cream for Small Cloth; 37 balls for Large Cloth;
or
CLARK'S "BIG BALL" MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. B. 34, Size 30: 20 balls of No. 1 White, No. 61 Ecru
or
No. 42 Cream for Small Cloth; 26 balls for Large Cloth;
or
CLARK'S "BIG BALI." MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. B. 345, Size 30: 12 balls of White or Ecru only for Small Cloth; 16 balls for Large Cloth.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook NO. 10. Small Cloth measures 60 1/2 inches square;
Large Cloth measures 60 1/2 x 81 1/2 inches. Each Motif measures 5 1/4 inches square and requires 53 yards.
1st rnd: Starting at center, ch 4. Make 15 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to top of starting chain (16 dc, counting starting chain as 1 dc).
2nd rnd: Ch 6, dc in joining; in each dc around make dc, ch 3 and dc. Join to 3rd ch of ch-6 (16 sps).
3rd rnd: Sl st in next ch, in next ch make sl st, ch 6 and dc; in center ch of each of the next 15 sps make dc, ch 3 and dc. Join as on 2nd rnd.
4th rnd: Sl st in next ch, in next ch make sl st, ch 6 and dc; in center ch of each of the next 15 sps make dc, ch 3 and dc. Join as on 2nd rnd.
5th rnd: Sl st in next ch, in sp make sl st, ch 1 and sc; (ch 7, sc in next sp) 15 times; ch 4, dc in first sc to form last loop (16 loops).
6th rnd: Sc in loop just formed, (ch 9, make 6 d tr in 5th ch from hook, drop loop of hook, insert hook in top of chain and draw dropped loop through—pc st made; sc in next loop) 15 times; ch 9, make a pc st. Join to first sc (16 pc sts).
7th rnd: Sl st in next 4 ch, ch 1, (sc at base of pc st, ch 8) 16 times. Join as before.
8th rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, (9 sc in next loop, sc in next sc) 15 times; 9 sc in last loop. Join.
9th rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, * ch 5, 6 d tr in last sc made, complete a pc st as before; ch 5, skip next 7 sc, sc in next 3 sc; ch 4, 5 tr in last sc made, complete a pc st as before; ch 4, skip next 7 sc, sc in next 3 sc. Repeat from * around, ending with sc in last 2 sc. Join.
10th rnd: Sl st to top of pc st, ch 1, (sc in next loop, ch 9, skip next sc, 7 d tr in next sc, complete pc st as before, ch 7, sc in next loop, ch 9) 7 times; sc in next loop, ch 9, skip next sc, 7 d-tr pc st in next sc, ch 4, d tr in first sc to form last loop (8 pc sts and 24 loops).
11th rnd: Ch 1, sc in loop, * ch 9, in next loop make sc, ch 7 and sc; ch 9, sc in next loop, (ch 7, sc in next loop) 4 times. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in first sc to form last loop.
12th rnd: Ch 1, sc in loop, ch 3; in same sc as last tr on 11th rnd was made, make tr, ch 2 and tr (V st made); * V st in center ch of next loop, ch 4; holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make 3 tr in center ch of next loop, thread over and draw through all 4 loops on hook (cluster made); ch 4, in same center chain make d tr, ch 4 and 3-tr cluster (corner made); ch 4, V st in center ch of next loop, V st in next sc, (ch 3, sc in next loop, ch 3, dc in next sc) 3 times; ch 3, sc in next loop, ch 3, V st in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3. Join to first sc.
13th rnd: Ch 3, * skip next sp, in first ch of next V st make dc, ch 2 and dc (Dc-V st over V st made); Tr-V st in first ch of next V st (Tr-V st over V st made); Tr-V st in 2nd ch of next sp, ch 3, in corner d tr make 3-tr cluster, ch 4, d tr, ch 4 and 3-tr cluster; ch 3, skip next cluster, Tr-V st in 3rd ch of next sp, Tr-V st over V st, Dc-V st over V st, skip next sp, Dc-V st in center ch of next 4 sps, Dc-V st in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with Dc-V st in center ch of next 4 sps; dc in joining of 12th rnd (at base of first ch-3), ch 3, sl st in top of first ch-3 to complete first V st.
14th rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, ch 9, skip next 2 V-st sps, sc in first tr of next V st, ch 9, skip V-st sp, sc in next sp, ch 11, holding back loops as for tr cluster, make 3 d tr in corner d tr, complete cluster as for tr cluster, * ch 11, skip next cluster, sc in next sp, ch 9, skip next V-st sp, sc in first tr of next V st, (ch 9, skip next 2 V-st sps, sc in first st of next V st) 5 times; ch 9, skip V-st sp, sc in next sp, ch 11, 3-d tr cluster in corner d tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 9. Join, break off and fasten.
SECOND MOTIF: Work exactly as for First Motif until first corner cluster on 14th rnd has been completed. Now work as follows: Sl st in any corner cluster on First Motif, ch 11; on Second Motif, skip next cluster, sc in next sp, ch 4; on First Motif, skip next ch-11 loop, sc in next ch-9 loop, ch 4; on Second Motif, skip next V-st sp, sc in first tr of next V st; (ch 4, sl st in loop on First Motif, ch 4; on Second Motif, skip next 2 V-st sps, sc in first st of next V st) 5 times; ch 4, sl st in next loop on First Motif, ch 4; on Second Motif, skip next V-st sp, sc in next sp, ch 11, 3-d tr cluster in corner d tr; sl st in corner cluster on First Motif; starting at * on 14th rnd of First Motif, complete Second Motif exactly as for First Motif (no more joinings).
MOTIFS: Make 11 x 11 motifs for Small Cloth, or 11 x 15 motifs for Large Cloth, joining motifs as Second Motif was joined to First Motif (where corners meet, join corners to previous joinings).
BORDER — 1st rnd: Attach thread in ch-11 loop preceding any corner, ** holding back loops as for previous clusters, draw up a loop in ch-11 loop, make 2 d tr in corner cluster, thread over and draw through all loops (right cluster made); ch 10, 3-d tr cluster in same corner cluster, ch 10, holding back loops as before, make 2 d tr in same corner cluster, then draw up a loop in next ch-11 loop, thread over and draw through all loops (left cluster made); * ch 10, (sc in next ch-9 loop, ch 10) 7 times; make a right cluster going into next ch-11 loop and the joining between motifs, ch 10, make a left cluster going into same joining and next ch-11 loop. Repeat from * across to within ch-11 loop preceding next corner. Repeat from ** around, ending with ch 5, d tr in first sc to form last loop.
BORDER — 2nd rnd: Sc in loop just formed, ch 10, sc in next loop, ** ch 5, in corner cluster make d tr, ch 10 and d tr; ch 5, sc in next loop; * ch 10, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across to within next corner cluster. Repeat from ** around, forming last loop as before.
BORDER — 3rd rnd: (Sc in loop, ch 10) 3 times; ** in corner loop make (tr, ch 10) twice; * sc in next loop, ch 10. Repeat from * across to within next corner loop. Repeat from ** around, ending with ch 10. Join, break off and fasten.
