Diamond Doily Pattern

Description: The Diamond Doily features elegant floral inserts surrounded by diamond-shaped lacework. With its intricate layers and soft petal repeats, it makes a lovely 17-inch accent piece when worked in fine cotton thread.

Materials: This doily measures about 17 inches in diameter when made with bedspread cotton and a number 8 steel crochet hook. The flower insert is repeated around the edge. It may be worked in all white or in suggested colors.
Abbreviations: ch (chain), dc (double crochet), sc (single crochet), tr (treble), p (picot), dtr (double treble), sp (space), rnd (round), sl st (slip stitch), lp (loop).
Rnd 1: Begin in center with green thread, ch 8, join with sl st to form a ring, ch 7, sc in 5th ch from hook to form a p, ch 5, sc in 5th ch from hook to form a p, dc over ring, (ch 5, sc in last dc made to form a p, ch 5, sc in 5th ch from hook to form a p, dc over the ring) 6 times, ch 5, sc in top of last dc made to form a p, ch 5, sc in 5th ch from hook to form a p, close the circle with a sl st in third ch of ch 7 first made (8 open sps).
Rnd 2: Ch 1, working from the back, sc around the ch 3 of rnd 1, * ch 4, sc around next dc of rnd 1, repeat from * around, join with sl st. Fasten off.
Rnd 3: With yellow thread, ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), work 7 trs over each ch 4, sl st in top of first tr.
Rnd 4: * Ch 7, a 5-joined-dtr over the next 5 tr of rnd 3, ch 7, sl st in next tr, sl st in first tr of next petal, repeat from * around, join with sl st. Fasten off.
Rnd 5: Join white thread in tip of any petal, * ch 6, sl st in same place to form a p, ch 12, sc in tip of next petal, repeat from * around, join with sl st in beginning, and into the p.
Rnd 6: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dtr), 9 dtr in the p, ch 5, sc in 5th ch of ch 12, ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook to form a p, ch 1, sc in next second ch of ch 12, ch 5, 10 dtr in the next p, repeat around, sl st in top of ch 5 first made.
Rnd 7: Ch 5, 2 dtr in same place, dtr in each of next 8 dtr, 3 dtr in last dtr, ch 10, 3 dtr in first dtr of next dtr-group, repeat around, sl st in top of ch 5 first made.
Rnd 8: Ch 5, dtr in same place, dtr in each of next 13 dtr, 2 dtr in last dtr, ch 5, sc in 4th ch of ch 10, ch 5 and complete a p, ch 1, sc in next second ch of ch 10, ch 5, 2 dtr in first dtr of next dtr-group, repeat around, join with sl st.
Rnd 9: Ch 5, dtr in each of next 7 dtr, ch 3, dtr in each of next 8 dtr, ch 11, dtr in first dtr of next dtr-group, repeat around, join with sl st.
Rnd 10: Ch 5, 7 dtr, ch 5, sc over ch 3 of rnd 9, ch 5, 8 dtr, ch 5, sc in 5th ch of ch 11 of rnd 9, ch 5 and complete a p, ch 1, sc in next second ch of ch 11, ch 5, 8 dtr, repeat around, join with sl st.
Rnd 11: Ch 5, 7 dtr, (ch 5, sc over ch 5 of previous rnd) twice, ch 5, 8 dtr, ch 11, 8 dtr, repeat around, join with ch 5, dtr to top of ch 5 at beginning of rnd, which brings the work into position for the next row.
Row 12: From here on each section is finished separately, working back and forth instead of around. Ch 11, turn, 8 dtr, (ch 5, sc over next ch 5 of previous row) 3 times, ch 5, 8 dtr, ch 5, dtr in 6th ch of ch 11 of previous row. Ch 11, turn, 8 dtr, ch 5, sc over second ch 5 of previous row, ch 5, sc over next ch 5, ch 5, (sk last ch 5 of previous row), 8 dtr, ch 5, dtr in 6th ch of ch 11 at turning. Ch 11, turn, 8 dtr, ch 5, sc over second ch 5 of previous row, ch 5 (sk last ch 5 of previous row), 8 dtr, ch 5, dtr in 6th ch of ch 11 at turning. Ch 11, turn, a 2-joined-dtr over the first 2 dtr, 12 dtr, a 2-joined-dtr over the last 2 dtr, ch 5, dtr in 6th ch of ch 11 at turning. Ch 11, turn, a 3-joined-dtr, 8 dtr, a 3-joined-dtr, ch 5, dtr in 6th ch of ch 11 at turning. Ch 11, turn, a 3-joined-dtr, 4 dtr, a 3-joined-dtr, ch 5, dtr in 6th ch of ch 11 at turning. Ch 11, turn, a 6-joined-dtr, ch 5, dtr in 6th ch of ch 11 at turning. Ch 5, turn, dtr in top of 6-joined-dtr, ch 5, dtr in same place, ch 5, sl st in 6th ch of ch 11 at turning, fasten off.
Rnd 13: With green thread, work a row of sc around doily, having 5 sc over each ch lp, sc in each dtr, and a p at each of the 4 dtr at each point.
Flower Insert: Follow rnds 1, 2, 3, and 4 above. At the 5th petal of the flower, after the 5-joined-dtr, ch 2, draw out a insert hook in sc at 4th spoke from inner point, draw lp through, ch 2, sl st in top of 5-joined-dtr, ch 7, sl st in next dtr of flower, which completes petal. Join the 6th petal of flower with similar joining at 7th and ch 1 to the second spoke from inner 8th petals to corresponding spoke point on the opposite side.
