Grape Doily - A beautiful 16-inch doily featuring clusters of shaded purple grapes and green leaves with a delicate edging.

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 1 ball each of White, No. 48 Hunter's Green, and No. 49 Chartreuse Green. 2 balls of No. 18-A Shaded Purples. Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7. Doily measures 16 inches in diameter.

1st rnd: Starting at center with White, ch 8. Join with sl st to form ring. Ch 3, 15 dc in ring. Join.

2nd rnd: Ch 4, 2 tr in same place as sl st, 3 tr in each dc around. Join.

3rd rnd: Ch 4, 4 tr in same place as sl st, * skip 2 tr, 5 tr in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join.

4th rnd: Sl st in next 2 tr, ch 4, 3 tr in same place as last sl st, * skip 4 tr, 7 tr in next tr. Repeat from * around, ending with 3 tr in same place as first 3 tr were made. Join.

5th rnd: Ch 4, 3 tr in same place as sl st, 7 tr in center tr of each tr group around, ending with 3 tr in same place as first 3 tr were made. Join.

6th rnd: Ch 4, 4 tr in same place as sl st, 9 tr in center tr of each tr group around, ending with 4 tr in same place as first 4 tr were made. Join.

7th rnd: Ch 4, 5 tr in same place as sl st, 11 tr in center tr of each tr group around, ending with 5 tr in same place as first 5 tr were made. Join and break off.

8th rnd: Attach Chartreuse Green to same place as sl st, ch 6, * in same place make (tr, ch 2) 6 times and tr; ch 5, skip 3 tr of next group, 5 tr in next tr, ch 3, skip 3 tr, 5 tr in next tr, ch 5, tr in center tr of next group, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

BUNCHES OF GRAPES: Work individually as follows:

1st row: Attach Shaded Purples to first ch-2 sp of any tr group, ch 4, 7 tr in same sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of ch-4 and draw dropped loop through (pc st made), (ch 2, 8 tr in next sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first tr, draw dropped loop through another pc st made) 6 times. Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: Sc in first sp, ch 3, sc in next sp. Repeat across. Turn.

3rd row: Sl st in first sp, ch 4, pc st in same sp, * ch 2, pc st in next sp. Repeat across. Ch 3, turn.

4th to 11th rows: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately 4 more times (2 pc sts on 11th row). Break off at end of 11th row. Make a bunch of grapes over each group of tr sps.

1st row: Attach Chartreuse Green to first sp on 2nd row of any bunch of grapes, ch 5, 5 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 3, 5 tr in next sp, ch 3, 5 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 5, sl st in first sp on 2nd row of next bunch of grapes, ch 3, sl st in first sp on 4th row. Ch 5, turn.

2nd row: (5 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 3, 5 tr in next sp, ch 3) twice; 5 tr in center tr of next group, ch 5, sl st in first sp on 4th row of bunch of grapes, ch 3, sl st in first sp on 6th row. Ch 5, turn.

3rd row: (5 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 3) 4 times; 5 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 5, sl st in first sp of 6th row of bunch of grapes, ch 3, sl st in first sp on 8th row. Ch 5, turn.

4th row: (7 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 3) 4 times; 7 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 5, sl st in first sp on 8th row of bunch of grapes, ch 3, sl st in first sp on 10th row. Ch 5, turn.

5th row: (9 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 3) 4 times; 9 tr in center tr of next tr group, ch 5, sl st in first sp on 10th row of bunch of grapes. Break off and turn.

6th row: Skip first tr group, attach thread to center tr of next tr group, ch 4, 10 tr in same place, (ch 3, 11 tr in center tr of next tr group) twice. Break off and turn.

7th row: Attach thread to center tr of center tr group, ch 4, 10 tr in same place. Break off. Work other leaves between bunches of grapes the same way. Attach Hunter's Green to center tr on last White rnd at base of any leaf and, working toward edge of doily, (ch 4, sc in sp between first and 2nd tr groups on next row) 6 times. Break off. Repeat for other sections of leaf as described above.

Attach Hunter's Green to first st on first tr group on any leaf, sc in same place, ** (ch 4, sc in 3rd ch from hook picot made skip 1 tr, sc in next tr) 4 times; * ch 4, sc in first st on next group, (ch 1, picot, skip 1 tr, sc in next tr) 5 times. Repeat from * 2 more times, ch 4, sc in first St on next group, (ch 1, picot, skip 1 st, sc in next st) 4 times; sc in first free st on next leaf. Repeat from ** around. Join and break off. Starch lightly and press.
