Op-Art Square Afghan Pattern
This classic Op-Art Afghan pattern consists of 96 modular motifs arranged into larger blocks for a bold graphic look.
MATERIALS: COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED,4 Ply ("Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 40ounces of No. 649 Olive Green and 36 ouncesof No. 426 Mulberry.
Crochet Hook Size H.
Afghan measures 53 x 79 inches (including border).Motif measures 6½ inches square.
GGAUGE: 4 dc = 1 inch; 6 rows = 3¼ inches.
NOTE: Motif is started at the center and is worked in half rows only.
MOTIF (Make 96) With Green, ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring.
1st Green row: Ch 4, 6 dc in ring. Ch 4, turn. 2nd Green row: 2 dc in first dc, dc in next 2 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, 3 dc in top of ch-4. Draw loop on hook out to measure 2 inches, drop loop from hook.
1st Mulberry row: With right side of first Green row facing, attach Mulberry to ch-4 ring. Ch 4, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of last dc on corresponding Green row and draw dropped loop through-beg-of-row joining made; 6 dc in same ring, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of Green ch-4 on corresponding row and draw dropped loop through-end-of-row joining made. Ch 4, turn.
NOTE: Regardless of color, all beg-of-row joinings and end-of-row joinings are made in same way.
2nd Mulberry row: Make a beg-of-row joining, work as for 2nd Green row, then make an end-of-row joining. Ch 4, do not turn but continue with Mulberry across sts of 2nd Green row.
3rd Mulberry row: Make 2 dc in joining just made, dc in next 6 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc; leaving the 2-inch Green loop hanging free, make 3 dc in last Green dc. With Mulberry, ch 4, turn.
4th Mulberry row: 2 dc in first dc, dc in next 10 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 10 dc, 3 dc in top of ch-4. Draw loop on hook out to measure 2 inches, drop loop from hook. Turn and pick up the dropped Green loop and work across the 2nd Mulberry row as follows:
3rd Green row: Ch 4, make a beg-of-row joining, 2 dc in top of Mulberry ch-4 below, dc in next 6 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc, 3 dc in last dc, then make an end-of-row joining.
4th Green row: Ch 4, turn, make a beg-of-row joining, work as for 4th Mulberry row, then make an end-of-row joining. Ch 5, do not turn but continue with Green across sts of 4th Mulberry row as follows:
5th Green row: In joining just made, make tr and dc, dc in next 14 dc, in next dc make dc, 3 tr and dc; dc in next 14 dc; leaving the 2-inch Mulberry loop hanging free, make dc and 2 tr in last Mulberry dc. With Green, ch 5, turn.
6th Green row: In first tr make tr and dc, dc in next 18 sts, in next tr make dc, 3 tr and dc; dc in next 18 sts, in top of ch-5 make dc and 2 tr. Break off Green and fasten. Turn, pick up the dropped Mulberry loop and work across the 4th Green row as follows:
5th Mulberry row: Ch 5, make a beg-of-row joining, in top of Green ch-4 below make tr and dc; dc in next 14 dc, in next dc make dc, 3 tr and dc; dc in next 14 dc; in last dc make dc and 2 tr. Then make an end-of-row joining.
6th Mulberry row: Ch 5, turn, make a beg-of-row joining, work as for 6th Green row, then make an end-of-row joining. Break off and fasten.
Block motifs to measurements. Sewing Mulberry edges together, make a block of 4 motifs. Make 23 more Blocks; then sew 4 x 6 Blocks together.
BORDER: Attach Green to first st following any corner. 1st rnd: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around, making 3 sc in same st at each corner. Join with sl st to first sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc at each corner. Join, ch 1, turn. 3rd rnd: Sl st loosely in each sc around. Join, break off and fasten. Press lightly.
