J. & P. COATS "BIG BALL" BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. A.105, Size 30: 1 ball of No. 1 White or No. 61 Ecru; or
CLARK'S "BIG BALL" MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. B.34, Size 30: 2 balls of No. 1 White, No. 42 Cream or No. 61 Ecru; Or
CLARK'S "BIG BALL" MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. B.345, Size 30: 1 ball of No. 1 White or No. 61 Ecru; AND
COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON: 1 ball of same color.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 10.
Doily measures 13 1/2 inches in diameter.
BACKGROUND Cut a 4-inch piece of "Speed-Cro-Sheen." Starting at center with Size 30 thread, ch 8. Join with sl st to form ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1, make 12 sc in ring. Join to first sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1, lay "Speed-Cro-Sheen" over the sts of first rnd and working over the "Speed-Cro-Sheen" and the sts of the first rnd, make 24 sc in ring. Join to first sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 1, continuing to work over the "Speed-Cro-Sheen," sc in joining, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join to first sc-32 sc. Cut off "Speed-Cro-Sheen" only and fasten on wrong side of work.
NOTE: Hereafter, "Speed-Cro-Sheen" will be referred to as padding when given in the directions and should be used double.
4th rnd: Ch 4, skip joining, * dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4.
5th rnd: Sl st in first sp, ch 5, * dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-5.
6th rnd: Sl st in first sp, ch 6, * dc in next sp, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-6.
7th and 8th rnds: Sl st to center of first sp, ch 7, * dc in next sp, ch 4. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-7.
9th rnd: Sl st to center of first sp, ch 8, * dc in next dc, (ch 4, dc in next sp) 4 times; ch 4. Repeat from * around to within last 3 sps, dc in next dc, ch 4, (dc in next sp, ch 4) 3 times. Join to 3rd ch of ch-8 (40 sps).
10th rnd: Ch 1, make 4 sc in each sp around. Join. (160 sc).
11th rnd: Ch 1, working over padding, sc in joining and in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join (180 sc). Being careful to keep work flat, stretch piece as far as it will go, then cut off padding and fasten on wrong side of work.
12th rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, * ch 7, sc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2. Join to first sc (45 loops).
13th rnd: Sl st in first 2 ch of first loop, sc in same loop, * ch 5, sc in 4th ch from hook, ch 4, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sc in 4th ch from hook, tr in first sc to form last loop.
14th rnd: Ch 1, sc in loop just formed, * ch 8, sc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2. Join to first sc.
15th rnd: Sl st in first 3 ch of first loop, sc in same loop, * ch 5, sc in 4th ch from hook, ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sc in 4th ch from hook, tr in first sc.
16th and 17th rnds: Repeat 14th and 15th rnds.
18th rnd: Ch 1, sc in loop just formed, * ch 8, sc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3. Join to first sc.
19th rnd: Sl st in first 3 ch of first loop, sc in same loop, * ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join.
20th rnd: Ch 1, make 8 sc in each loop around. Join (360 sc).
21st rnd: Ch 1, working over padding, sc in joining, sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. Stretch piece so that work will measure 7 1/2 inches in diameter. Cut off padding and fasten on wrong side of work.
22nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, ch 3, sc in next sc, * ch 7, skip next 4 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, skip last 4 sc, dtr in first sc.
23rd through 26th rnd: Ch 1, in loop just formed make sc, ch 3 and sc; * ch 7, skip next ch-3 loop, in next large loop make sc, ch 3 and sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in first sc.
27th, 28th and 29th rnds: Work as for last rnd, making ch-8 loops instead of ch-7 loops and making last loop with ch 4, tr in first sc.
30th rnd: Ch 1, sc in loop just formed, * ch 9, skip next ch-3 loop, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 9. Join to first sc. Do not break off.
POINTED EDGING * For next large point, make 11 sc in each of next 2 loops, make 6 sc in next loop, ch 9; turn, skip the incompleted sc-loop in work, sc in the 6th sc of next sc-loop, ch 9, sl st in the 6th sc of following sc-loop, ch 1; turn, 11 sc in loop just formed, 6 sc in next loop, ch 9; turn, skip the incompleted sc-loop, sl st in the 6th sc of next sc-loop, ch 1; turn, in loop just formed make 6 sc, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook—picot made, and 5 sc, (sl st in the 6th sc of next incompleted sc-loop, 5 sc in same loop) twice; for next small point, make 11 sc in next loop of the 30th rnd, make 6 sc in following loop, ch 9; turn, skip the incompleted sc-loop in work, sl st in the 6th sc of next sc-loop; ch 1, turn, in next loop make 6 sc, picot and 5 sc, sl st in the 6th sc of next incompleted sc-loop, 5 sc in same loop. Repeat from * around. Join. Break off and fasten.
FLOWER AND LEAF BORDER Flower Starting at center, ch 7. Join with sl st to form ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1, make 12 sc in ring. Join.
2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, ch 4, skip next sc, * sc in next sc, ch 4, skip next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in first sc-6 loops.
3rd rnd: In each of next 2 loops, make sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc and sc—petal made; sl st in the picot at tip of any small point; make a petal in each of remaining 4 loops. Join to first sc. Break off and fasten. Make a Flower at the tip of re-maining 12 small points. SMALL
LEAF Starting at center, ch 15.
1st rnd: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sl st in the picot at tip of any large point (tip of leaf); sc in same ch where last sc was made; working along opposite side of starting chain, sc in each ch to within last ch, make 2 sc in same place where first sc was made (base of leaf).
NOTE: Hereafter, work in back loop only of each sc. Now work in rows as follows:
1st row: Sc in each sc to within last 3 sc before the tip. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Making 3 sc in center sc of the 3-sc group at base, sc in each sc to within 3 sc before the tip. Ch 1, turn.
3rd and 4th rows: Making 3 sc in center sc at base, sc in each sc to within last 3 sc. Ch 1, turn.
5th row: Sc in each sc to base. Break off and fasten. Make a second leaf, joining it to the same picot at tip of same point as before. Sew base of leaves to the back of each flower as shown. Make 2 leaves at tip of each large point and sew in place. Cut a round piece of brown paper, 14 1/2 inches in diameter-1/2 inch margin allowed. Stretch the background and baste outer edge through paper. Make 6 flowers with 6 petals on each flower, omitting the joining to picot. Divide the 12th rnd of background into 6 equal parts and mark with pins. Place a flower at each pin.
FIRST LARGE LEAF Starting at center, ch 18.
1st rnd: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, making in last ch, 1 sc, ch 3 for tip and 1 sc; working along opposite side of starting chain, sc in each ch across, making 2 sc in same place where first sc was made for base. Now repeat first through 5th row of Small Leaf, having 4 sc free at the end of each row instead of 3 sc. Break off and fasten at end of last row.
SECOND LARGE LEAF Work as for First Large Leaf to within the ch-3 at the tip on first rnd, ch 1, sl st in tip of First Leaf, ch 1, sc in same ch where last sc was made. Now continue same as for First Large Leaf. Make 5 more pairs of First and Second Large Leaves. Arrange leaves with tips facing outer edge and bases behind the flowers as shown and pin in place. Baste in place through the background and the paper.
SCALLOP BAND When making chain, mark every 50th ch to simplify counting. Ch 577, having 13 ch sts to 1 inch and measuring about 44 1/2 inches. Cut padding to measure 50 inches.
1st rnd: Working over the padding, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Drop padding but do not cut off. Being careful not to twist work, sl st in first sc to form ring.
2nd rnd: Working without the padding, * sc in next sc, (skip next sc, sc in next sc) 3 times for base of scallop; sc in next sc, picot, (sc in next 5 sc, picot) 3 times; sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, picot, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, picot, (sc in next 5 sc, picot) 3 times. Repeat from * around. Join, break off and fas-ten. Spread sts evenly along the padding, so that all scallops will be the same size. Cut off padding and fasten on wrong side. Arrange band on background so that the starting chain at the base of each scallop touches the top of the 21st rnd as shown. Baste scallops through the background and the paper. Leaving the basting sts intact, tear paper away. Sew flowers, leaves and scallops securely in place. Starch lightly and press.
