Free Vintage Crochet - Cosmos Runner Doily Pattern
MATERIALS:
This lovely cosmos runner brings a breath of spring to any room where a runner or scarf may be used. You will need one 175-yard ball each of red and green bed-spread cotton, one 250-yard ball of white bedspread cotton and one ball of number 30 yellow crochet cotton. Use steel crochet hooks numbers 10 and 14.
Abbreviations: ch (chain) sl st (slip stitch sc (single crochet) rnd (round) dc (double crochet) lp (loop) st (stitch) sk (skip)

Center—First motif: With white and number 10 crochet hook, ch 8, join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, make 21 dc in ring, join with a sl st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) 3 times, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) 4 times, 2 dc in next dc, sl st in top of ch 3. Counting the ch 3 as a dc there are 32 dc in this rnd.
Rnd 3: Ch 5, (dc in next dc, ch 1) 31 times, join with a sl st in third st of ch 4. There are 32 dc with ch 1 between.
Rnd 4: Ch 5, (dc in next dc, ch 2) 31 times, join with a sl st in third st of ch 5.
Rnd 5: Sc in same st with sl st, (ch 7, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc) 15 times, ch 3, dc in first sc of rnd. This puts thread in position to begin next rnd. There are 16 lps.
Rnd 6: (Ch 7, sc in next ch 7) 15 times, ch 7, sl st in top of dc in rnd 5. Fasten off.
Second motif: Repeat rnds 1 through 5 of first motif.
Rnd 6: Ch 3, holding wrong side of first motif toward wrong side of second motif, sc in any ch lp of first motif, (ch 3, sc in next ch lp of second motif, ch 3, sc in next lp of first motif) twice, ch 3, sc in next lp on second motif, (ch 7, sc in next lp of second motif) 12 times, ch 7, join with sl st in top of dc in rnd 5. Fasten off.
Third motif: Repeat rnds 1 through 5 of the first motif.
Rnd 6: Ch 3, holding wrong side of second motif toward wrong side of third motif, sc in fourth free lp from joining on second motif, (ch 3, sc in next lp of third motif, ch 3, sc in next lp of second motif) twice, ch 3, sc in next lp on third motif, * (ch 7, sc in next lp of third motif) 12 times, ch 7, join with sl st in dc of rnd 5. Fasten off.
Fourth motif: Repeat rnds 1 through 5 of the first motif.
Rnd 6: Join 4th motif to third motif in same manner as third motif is joined to second motif, at * in rnd 6 of third motif start working in this manner: ch 7, sc in next lp of 4th motif, ch 2, sk one free lp from joining of first and second motifs, sc in next free lp of first motif; complete this joining same as other joinings, ch 7, sc in each of the remaining lps of 4th motif, ending with ch 7, sl st in dc of rnd 5. Fasten off. Make 8 more motifs, joining in the same manner as third and 4th motifs were joined.

Cosmos With red, ch 8, join with sl st to form ring.
Petal—Row 1: Ch 1, * 3 sc in ring, ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Dc in each of next 2 sc, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Dc at base of ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.
Row 4: Dc in each of next 3 dc and in top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.
Row 5: (Sc in next dc, ch 3) 3 times, sc in top of ch 3, ch 3, sc in top of dc in row 3 (the dc along edge), ch 3, sc in top of ch 3 at beginning of row 2, ch 3, sl st in sc of row 1. Repeat from * of row 1 through row 5 until 8 petals have been made, sl st in first sc of first petal. Fasten off.

With green, sc in first ch 3 lp at the tip of any petal, * ch 7, sk 2 ch 3 lps, sc in next ch 3 lp, ch 7, sc in first ch 3 lp on next petal: repeat from * around, ending with ch 7, sl st in first sc (16 lps). Fasten off. Make 19 more cosmos in same manner.

Cosmos center: With number 30 yellow and number 14 crochet hook, ch 2, 7 sc in first ch st, sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around (14 sc). Join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2—there will be 28 sc in this rnd.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st with last sl st, (ch 3, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) 13 times, ch 3, sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Make 19 more flower centers in same manner and sew on cosmos, leave the ch 3 lps free so they can stand up.
Joining cosmos: With number 10 hook, join white with sc to any green lp on cosmos, ch 3, (hold wrong side of white center toward wrong side of cosmos), sc in fourth free ch lp from first joining on side of white center, (ch 3, sc in next green lp, ch 3, sc in next lp on white motif) twice, ch 3, sc in next green lp, * ch 7, sc in next green lp, repeat from * around cosmos motif. End with ch 7, sl st in first sc on rnd. Fasten off. Join white to green lp of second cosmos with sc, ch 3, sc in fourth lp on first cosmos from the joining of first cosmos, (ch 3, sc in next lp of second cosmos, ch 3, sc in next lp on first cosmos) twice, ch 3, sc in next lp of second cosmos, ch 7, sc in next lp of second cosmos, ch 3, sk one free lp on second white motif, sc in next free lp of white motif, (ch 3, sc in next green lp, ch 3, sc in next lp on white motif) twice, ch 3, sc in next green lp, * ch 7, sc in next green lp, repeat from * around, ending with ch 7, sl st in first sc of rnd. Join remainder of cosmos in same manner around white center.
Fill-in Lace: With white, ch 8, join with sl st to form ring, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, sc in one of the free lps between joinings of four motifs, (ch 1, 3 dc in ring, ch 5, sc in sc of joining of motifs, ch 5, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, sc in free lp of next motif) 3 times, ch 1, 3 dc in ring, ch 4, sc in sc of joining of motifs, ch 5, sl st in first dc. Fasten off. Fill remaining 20 spaces in same manner. Starch lightly and pin out in true shape. Make the ch 3 lps of flower centers stand up. This runner measures about 281/2 x 141/4 inches when blocked.
